Better practice - not more range balls!

You decide you need to do some practicing to “find you game”. So, just like thousands of other golf warriors, you head to the range with your large bucket of 100+ golf balls and try to beat the game into submission. Well, the odds are pretty good that 30 minutes later you will be no further ahead than when you started, because your practice will have been based on the flawed theory that if you hit more golf balls you are bound to improve. Let me be clear on this: THAT WON’T WORK!

Let me suggest you rethink your practice regime and try a different approach. First, develop a game plan before you go to practice. Make a list of what you want (need?) to work on (i.e. alignment, grip, swing tempo, shoulder turn, solid contact, etc.). Now, commit to working on only one of those items during each practice session. Purchase a SMALL bucket of balls and really work on that segment of the swing. Take your time. If your really serious about improving than it will probably take you about 45 minutes to get through that small bucket of balls, because you will be thinking about and rehearsing the mechanics of what you are trying to accomplish between each shot. Don’t get discouraged if the ball flight is not what you want after three shots. Stick with the program. Make small swings until you get it right and then gradually lengthen the swing out. It will come together as you work your way through your checklist. This practice theory is based on better practice, not more balls.

If you need some help developing that checklist, give me a call. A good golf lesson doesn’t mean radical changes to your swing. It’s really a trained set of eyes to help you understand YOUR swing and help you develop that list so your practice is not wasted.
