BEING TOO FLEXIBLE CAN BE AN ISSUE FOR JUNIORS

You wouldn't think being too flexible would be a bad thing in a golf swing, but for juniors it can create some unique problems.

Too much flexibility makes it easier for juniors to make too long a backswing, where the club shaft goes well beyond parallel with the ground. Because they have not yet developed the necessary hand, wrist and arm strength, it is difficult for juniors to maintain consistent control the club when this occurs.

Another common problem seen in juniors is having too much lateral motion in the lower body on the downswing. Because they have a lot flexibility, it is easy for juniors to initiate the downswing by driving their hips laterally towards the target. If the hips slide out from underneath the shoulders it forces the spine to tilt backwards, away from the target, which can result in poor weight transfer and balance issues. It also makes it difficult to swing at the ball with a downward motion, which is necessary for consistent contact.

So, while flexibility can be an great asset, it is important to recognize it must be harnessed so it is working to your benefit and not to your detriment. Making the game fun, while teaching them sound fundamentals, will provide juniors with a lifetime of enjoyment with the game of golf.
